FIFA Caps Toronto World Cup Ticket Resale
7 May
Summary
- FIFA now limits World Cup ticket resales to original price in Toronto.
- Ontario's new law bans reselling event tickets above face value.
- Other World Cup venues allow resale above original ticket price.

FIFA has implemented new terms for reselling World Cup tickets in Toronto, restricting resale prices to their original cost. This policy update, effective as of Wednesday, aligns with Ontario's recent legislation banning the resale of event tickets above face value. The move follows the removal of tickets for six matches at Toronto Stadium from FIFA's official marketplace last week. Ontario's 'Putting Fans First Act' explicitly prohibits selling tickets on the secondary market for more than their original price.
Under FIFA's revised terms, any ticket for a Toronto Stadium match cannot be listed on its platform for a resale price exceeding the initial purchase amount. This applies even if the ticket was previously bought on the marketplace above its face value. In contrast, tickets for matches at the other 15 World Cup venues can still be listed above face value on FIFA's official resale and exchange marketplace. FIFA states this platform is designed to protect fans and adheres to federal and local regulations. As of April 20, over five million tickets had been sold for the tournament, co-hosted by Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
