Tatis Jr. Loses Legal Fight Over Future Earnings Deal
24 May
Summary
- Fernando Tatis Jr. lost his legal bid to void a future earnings deal.
- He owes $3.74 million to Big League Advance Fund, including interest.
- The judge ruled his legal challenge came too late for arbitration.

A San Diego Superior Court judge has ruled against Fernando Tatis Jr. in his attempt to invalidate a financial agreement made in October 2017. The ruling confirmed that Tatis Jr. must pay the Big League Advance Fund approximately $3.74 million.
This sum includes overdue payments since late 2023, accrued interest, and legal costs. Tatis Jr., who received $2 million from the fund in exchange for 10% of his future earnings, is now obligated to pay this amount based on his 14-year, $340 million deal with the Padres.
The judge determined that Tatis Jr.'s legal challenge was submitted after the arbitration proceedings had begun, rendering it too late. Although the contract was negotiated and signed in the Dominican Republic, the court applied California consumer protection laws, finding Delaware's interest minimal and the contract largely performed in California.
Tatis Jr. had previously stated he was fighting to protect young players from predatory lenders and illegal financial schemes. His legal team argued that Big League Advance operated as an unlicensed lender using unlawful tactics, though the contract included an arbitration clause.
