Ferdinand: Van Nistelrooy blocked Forlan's Man Utd success
2 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Ruud van Nistelrooy's status hindered Diego Forlan's confidence.
- Forlan trained well but rarely started due to Van Nistelrooy.
- Wayne Rooney rejected Chelsea to join Manchester United.
Rio Ferdinand has asserted that Ruud van Nistelrooy's standing within Manchester United was the primary obstacle to Diego Forlan realizing his potential at the club. Ferdinand described Van Nistelrooy as the 'golden child,' ensuring his place in the starting lineup irrespective of Forlan's training efforts.
Forlan, who arrived in 2022, reportedly possessed impressive skills and a potent finishing ability, drawing comparisons to Harry Kane. However, Ferdinand stated that Van Nistelrooy's consistent selection, even when Forlan performed exceptionally in training, severely impacted the Uruguayan's confidence, preventing him from flourishing.
Ferdinand also touched upon Wayne Rooney's transfer in 2004, noting Rooney's insistence on joining Manchester United despite offers from Chelsea, who had proposed a loan move. Forlan ultimately scored 17 goals in 98 appearances for United, securing a cult hero status, while Rooney became the club's all-time leading scorer.
