FIA Settles F1 Compression Ratio Dispute
28 Feb
Summary
- Engine compression ratio rules to change June 1, 2026.
- New regulations will include both hot and cold engine tests.
- Full hot testing for engine compression begins in 2027.

The FIA has announced a resolution to Formula 1's technical dispute concerning engine compression ratios. A compromise has been reached, introducing dual hot and cold engine tests starting from June 1, 2026. This modification addresses concerns raised by teams regarding power output and compliance with the new V6 engine regulations.
Initially set at a maximum of 16:1 cold for the 2026 power unit regulations, the compression ratio has been a point of contention. The FIA's decision mandates that from June 1, 2026, the compression ratio will be measured under both cold conditions and at 130 degrees Centigrade.
Looking ahead, the governing body confirmed that by 2027, engine compression ratios will exclusively be measured when engines are operating hot. This phased approach aims to facilitate the transition for new manufacturers and maintain competitive balance within the sport.
