Summary
- Maya Weug secured a runner-up position in the 2025 F1 Academy season.
- Despite success, Weug struggles to secure a full-time racing seat for 2026.
- Susie Wolff expresses frustration over limited progression opportunities.

Maya Weug, the runner-up in the 2025 F1 Academy season with three wins and nine podiums, recently expressed her struggles in securing a race seat for 2026, calling it the "toughest year" of her career. Despite her significant achievements in the all-female series, Weug has found limited options for a full-time racing program.
F1 Academy managing director Susie Wolff shared her sympathy and disappointment, noting that while series champion Doriane Pin has progressed to LMP2 and tested an F1 car, Weug faces a different reality. Wolff recalled Weug's past sacrifices, including returning to F4 levels to gain racing experience, underscoring the driver's dedication.
A funded GT3 test for Weug with Ferrari by F1 Academy did not yield any subsequent opportunities. Weug also had brief stints in the Belcar series and a planned entry in the 24 Hours of Zolder that fell through. She has since taken on a trackside coaching role.
Wolff acknowledged the immense financial barriers and tough competition in motorsport, not just for women but for many aspiring male drivers. She is committed to addressing how F1 Academy can create more opportunities for talented female drivers, recognizing it as a critical challenge to fix for the future.
When discussing the possibility of extending driver eligibility in F1 Academy, Wolff explained that the series functions as a race event rather than a governing body. She highlighted the significant impact F1 Academy has already made in disrupting the industry, bringing in brands, and supporting young drivers, while emphasizing a continuous effort to improve and create more opportunities.
