F1 Revamps Engines for 2027: Less Electric, More Fuel!
8 May
Summary
- F1 engines will see a power shift from electric to internal combustion by 2027.
- Drivers sought changes for more intuitive engine management and control.
- The FIA is proposing to reduce electrical power and increase fuel burning.

Formula 1 is planning significant engine modifications for the 2027 season, shifting the power balance away from electrical systems towards internal combustion. This strategic alteration aims to make driving more intuitive for competitors.
The FIA announced on Friday that the proposed changes will reduce the electrical energy component's power by 50kW. Concurrently, the internal combustion engine's output will be boosted by 50kW through increased fuel burning.
These adjustments stem from extensive consultations with F1 drivers, who expressed frustration with the current systems. Drivers have found the 2026 engines demand slower cornering and less aggressive acceleration to manage electrical energy.
While the proposal has been agreed upon in principle by key stakeholders, it requires further refinement and a formal vote. The FIA's technical groups, including teams and power unit manufacturers, will finalize the package before submission to the World Motor Sport Council.
Discussions also touched upon potential future rule cycles, with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem suggesting a return to V8 engines around 2030 or 2031. The current cycle of rules is set to conclude at the end of 2026.
