Extreme athlete and philanthropist Matt Dawson died on August 15, 2026, while attempting to summit Ismoil Somoni Peak in Tajikistan. His family announced his "tragic accident" occurred during the mountaineering expedition.
Born in 1978, Dawson left a 15-year career in finance after the deaths of his mother and girlfriend. He then dedicated himself to extreme sports, including mountain climbing, polar and desert travel, and oceanic rowing, accumulating nine world records.
In 2018, Dawson established the Dawson's Peak Foundation, a charity focused on inspiring individuals by hosting adventure projects globally with sponsored athletes. Most recently, he was undertaking a three-peak challenge to raise funds for the ALS Network, inspired by a friend's diagnosis.
