De La Cruz Makes Reds History with 20 Stolen Bases

Elly De La Cruz recently set a new Cincinnati Reds franchise record by recording at least 20 stolen bases in each of his initial four Major League seasons. This remarkable achievement occurred on Thursday when he secured his 20th stolen base of the year against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

De La Cruz currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 10 stolen bases accumulated during July, demonstrating aggressive base running following a recovery from a hamstring injury earlier in the season.

The Cincinnati Reds have displayed significant power throughout the current season, tying for fifth in MLB with 139 home runs. Notably, nearly half of their runs have been scored via home runs, the second-highest percentage in the league.

In a roster move, infielder Matt McLain was activated from the injured list on Thursday, leading to Edwin Arroyo's reassignment to Triple-A Louisville. Arroyo, who had been with the major league team since late May, faced challenges defensively and offensively.

Reds manager Terry Francona commented on Arroyo's situation, suggesting that the game can sometimes feel overwhelming for young players. He emphasized the importance of not getting too fixated on initial impressions, noting that players often appear stronger and more capable upon returning. Arroyo's high chase rate, exceeding 37%, was cited as a factor impacting his major league performance, with his return to the majors anticipated in the future.
