Eileen Gu: Scientist, Skier, Symbol of Controversy

Eileen Gu, an American-born athlete, has achieved remarkable success representing China in freestyle skiing. She has become the most decorated freestyle skier, male or female, and is positioned as a high earner for the 2026 Winter Olympics, according to Forbes. Beyond her athletic achievements, Gu is a Stanford University student, an IMG model, and is known for her analytical and introspective approach to her sport.

Her decision at age 15 in 2019 to represent her mother's native China has made her a controversial figure. Gu often describes her process as a scientific experiment, focusing on "higher optimization" of her mind and body. She visualizes her jumps and analyzes trajectory and angles, entering a "flow state" during her 30-second performances.

Gu acknowledges the immense pressure and scrutiny she faces, including questions about her dual representation and reported earnings. Reports indicate that Gu and fellow American-born skater Zhu Yi were paid a combined $6.6 million by the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau in 2025, with total payments reaching $14 million over three years. While the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee offers medal bonuses, it does not pay athlete salaries.

Despite the controversies, Gu's ambition extends beyond competition. She aims for a "global beneficial impact," believing fashion and sport are key avenues. She asserts that representing China has amplified her ability to inspire participation in snow sports, citing a significant increase in such activities in China since the 2022 Games. Gu encourages her critics to channel their energy into positive actions.

Recently, Gu experienced a personal loss with the death of her maternal grandmother. She stated she had promised her grandmother bravery, not necessarily Olympic gold. Having completed what she described as a marathon run at a "hundred-meter dash" pace, Gu has left a significant mark, with a Chinese flag proclaiming "Veni, vidi, vici" – she came, she saw, she conquered.
