In a surprising move, Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has departed Manchester City after 8 years to join Turkish club Fenerbahçe. The 32-year-old, who was a key part of Manchester City's recent success under Pep Guardiola, including their treble-winning season in 2022-23 and four straight Premier League titles, says he was no longer happy at the English club and had asked to leave in 2024.
Ederson has now signed a 3-year contract with Fenerbahçe, and he is excited about the new challenge. "When Fenerbahçe came along, I embraced it," he said. "I continue with my winning mentality, the same winning mentality I had at City and Benfica, and I want to win at Fenerbahçe too." The goalkeeper also expressed his desire to help Fenerbahçe end their long wait for a domestic title, as the club hasn't won a national championship since 2014.
Ederson, who was last called up to the Brazilian national team in November 2024, is hopeful of making the squad for next year's World Cup. "My expectations [of making the World Cup squad] are high," he said, though he acknowledged that no player has a guaranteed spot.
