Double Amputee Conquers Everest Against All Odds

Hari Budha Magar, a double above-knee amputee, has reached the summit of Mount Everest, defying expectations and overcoming immense challenges. Magar lost his legs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan during his service with the British Army's Gurkhas. His ascent to Everest's peak on May 19, 2023, marked a significant personal victory and a powerful statement for disability awareness.

His path was fraught with peril, including a near-fatal experience at over 8,000 meters where he ran out of oxygen, and the misreporting of his death by those below. Furthermore, Magar faced opposition from Nepal, which had instituted a ban on double amputees climbing its highest mountains. He successfully challenged this ban in Nepal's Supreme Court, paving the way for his historic climb.

Magar's determination was evident throughout the arduous climb, which demanded three times the energy of an able-bodied climber. Post-summit, he and his guide faced further life-threatening situations due to oxygen depletion and freezing conditions, but were aided by a Sherpa carrying vital supplies. Magar's achievements extend beyond Everest, having completed the Seven Summits, becoming the world's first double above-knee amputee to do so.
