Canine Competitors Catch Waves at Dog Surfing Championship

The 10th annual World Dog Surfing Championships recently took place at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, drawing canine competitors and enthusiastic crowds. Dogs of various breeds and sizes, accompanied by their human partners, showcased their surfing skills. The challenging waves led organizers to award a 'spirit of surfing' prize, with Rippin' Rosie, a 5-year-old Labrador from Soquel, earning the top honor. Rosie also secured first place in the large/extra-large dog category and in tandem paddleboarding with her human, Steve Drottar.

Other notable participants included Iza, a French bulldog from Pleasanton, and Bradley "Shortboard" Cooper, a young mixed-breed rescue from Long Beach, who placed second and third overall, respectively. Beyond the main competition, awards were also presented for different dog sizes, tandem teams, and a canine fashion show. The event fostered a lively atmosphere, with spectators enjoying the spectacle of dogs catching waves while their own pets played on the beach.

Many attendees traveled from various parts of California, highlighting the event's appeal. Spectators praised the dogs' skills and the joyful environment. The championships provided a unique platform for dogs and their owners to bond through a shared passion for surfing, creating memorable experiences for all involved.
