Derek Carr: Protect Patrick Mahomes for Super Bowl Runs

Retired Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr recently expressed concerns regarding the protection afforded to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. Speaking on Sports Radio 810, Carr emphasized the immense value and difficulty of playing quarterback at the highest level, particularly for Mahomes.

Carr suggested that the Chiefs must prioritize safeguarding Mahomes, noting that his exceptional talent and past Super Bowl victories are undeniable. He pointed out that while Mahomes possesses incredible abilities, consistent pressure and hits make the game significantly harder. Carr advocated for a strong offensive line and running game to give Mahomes the necessary time and space to operate.

The former quarterback elaborated on Mahomes' unique skillset, describing his accuracy and ability to throw from various arm angles. Carr believes Mahomes' understanding of defensive coverages has grown significantly over the years, making him an even more formidable opponent for the NFL. He warned that a smarter, more developed Mahomes, coupled with adequate protection, poses a significant threat.

Carr concluded by stating that if the Chiefs consistently provide Mahomes with protection, they should be perennial contenders for the AFC Championship and the Super Bowl. Mahomes sustained a knee injury during the 2025 season, which saw him play 14 games, throwing 22 touchdowns against 11 interceptions, and rushing for 422 yards and five touchdowns.
