The Demarest Norsemen are on the cusp of a championship, advancing to the Bergen County final for the first time in nearly five decades. The 12th-seeded team stunned the unbeaten top seed, Bergen Catholic, with a 2-0 victory in the semifinals on Saturday.
This marks Demarest's first appearance in the county final since 1977, the year they won their sole title. Their improbable journey through the tournament has been defined by a stout defense, recording four shutouts and overcoming three top-five seeds, including the defending champions.
Senior Yiannis Parikos broke the deadlock with a penalty kick in the 23rd minute. The Norsemen extended their lead midway through the second half when senior Max Almeida capitalized on a rebound. Goalkeeper Danny Scuro was instrumental in preserving the win, tallying 13 saves against a formidable Bergen Catholic offense.
