Mitchell Sets New NZ ODI Run Record vs. India
7 Nov
Summary
- Daryl Mitchell now leads NZ players in ODI runs against India in a calendar year.
- He surpassed Chris Cairns' 1999 record of 403 runs.
- Mitchell also broke Kane Williamson's record for most runs against one team.

Daryl Mitchell has officially claimed the top spot for the most One Day International (ODI) runs scored by a New Zealand player against India within a single calendar year. This significant achievement came during the ongoing series, adding another chapter to his cricketing milestones. Mitchell's performance surpassed the previous record held by former all-rounder Chris Cairns.
In 1999, Chris Cairns amassed 403 runs in 10 innings against India. Daryl Mitchell, however, has now accumulated 435 runs in just five innings against India in 2026, as of November 7th. He needed only 24 runs in the second ODI at Wellington to break Cairns' long-standing record, which he achieved during the 19th over.
This remarkable run-scoring spree also saw Mitchell break Kane Williamson's record for the most ODI runs by a New Zealand batter against any single team in a calendar year. Williamson had scored 411 runs against Sri Lanka in 2015. Mitchell's tally of 435 runs in 2026 now sets a new benchmark.
Globally, the record for most ODI runs against India in a calendar year is held by Tillakaratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka, who scored 592 runs in 2009. West Indies' Chris Gayle and England's Marcus Trescothick also feature high on this list from 2002.
