Defenseman Darnell Nurse has been traded to the San Jose Sharks by the Edmonton Oilers. The deal, announced Wednesday, sent Nurse to San Jose in exchange for defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and the rights to forward Zachary Sharp.
Nurse, 31, has four seasons remaining on an eight-year contract valued at $74 million, with an average annual value of $9.25 million. He was a prominent figure for the Oilers, spending all 12 of his NHL seasons with the team. During his tenure, Nurse amassed 324 points in 798 regular-season games, ranking fifth among Oilers defensemen in points and second in games played. He also holds the team's all-time records for blocked shots and hits.
Sharks General Manager Mike Grier expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, describing Nurse as a "strong, veteran, mobile defenseman" who "eats up top-pair minutes" and brings a crucial "physical element" to every shift. Grier emphasized Nurse's significant leadership qualities and extensive experience, which are expected to be invaluable to the Sharks' roster.
Mukhamadullin, a 24-year-old defenseman, recorded 12 points in 50 games for the Sharks this past season. He was originally selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft. Sharp, a 21-year-old defenseman drafted by the Sharks in the fourth round of the 2025 NHL Draft, has yet to sign a contract but played 37 games for Western Michigan University last season, tallying 19 points.
