Dale Jr.: Ford hits 'terminal velocity,' Toyota leads

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has voiced significant concerns regarding Ford's standing in NASCAR's manufacturer competition, warning that the manufacturer has reached "terminal velocity." He observed Toyota's clear dominance, especially on intermediate tracks during the recent Cup race, a performance validated by Toyota's lead in the 2026 manufacturer standings with seven wins. Tyler Reddick alone secured five wins for 23XI Racing.

In contrast, Ford has only managed one win through thirteen races, with Ryan Blaney at Phoenix being the sole victor. Dale Jr. noted that even strong Ford teams like RFK Racing lack the consistent speed to challenge Toyota. He expressed less optimism for Ford's ability to find competitive gains, particularly on mile-and-a-half tracks.

Chevrolet, with five wins, remains in striking distance. Dale Jr. is more hopeful for Chevrolet's prospects due to their refreshed Camaro ZL1 body for 2026. He believes Chevrolet has room for improvement as teams learn the new package, suggesting their ceiling is yet to be revealed. This contrasts with Ford's perceived stagnation.

Dale Jr.'s own JR Motorsports is deeply tied to Chevrolet. The team, co-owned by Dale Jr., Kelley Earnhardt Miller, and Rick Hendrick, benefits from Chevrolet's engineering and data. Despite Chevrolet's current learning curve with the new body affecting drafting, Dale Jr. remains focused on his long-term goal of moving JR Motorsports into the Cup Series full-time, though charter prices present a significant financial hurdle.
