Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell has made the decision to temporarily bench shortstop Dansby Swanson, a move aimed at helping the All-Star player mentally regroup amid a collective team slump. Swanson, known for his Gold Glove-caliber defense, is currently batting just .180, significantly below expectations for a player nearing the halfway point of a seven-year, $177 million contract.

Counsell stated that Swanson is healthy but needs a mental break to address mechanical issues and decision-making at the plate. This strategy has been employed before with other players, including Cubs outfielder Ian Happ. Swanson, 32, developed an ironman reputation with the Atlanta Braves, appearing in all 162 games during their 2022 contract year.
