Two weeks ago, on November 2, 2025, Panthers running back Rico Dowdle was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after scoring a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers. Dowdle's celebration included two hip thrusts, a nod to the famous 'Hingle McCringleberry' sketch from Key & Peele. However, the NFL rules only allow for one hip thrust before a penalty is called, unlike the three permitted in the comedy sketch.
Seeking clarity, the Panthers invited Key to a team meeting on November 8, 2025. Key explained that "the rules made up in a comedy sketch do not necessarily reflect the rules in the NFL." Dowdle was fined $14,491 for the celebration, which Key jokingly calculated as "seven grand a pump."
In response, Dowdle started a GoFundMe page to pay the fine, but the money was actually donated to charity. Key and his wife Elle then surprised the team by announcing a $15,000 donation to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina, the charity Dowdle had chosen.
