Colts Rookie Safety Wohler's Season Ends Before Takeoff
18 Aug
Summary
- Colts rookie safety/linebacker Hunter Wohler headed to IR with Lisfranc injury
- Colts sign 4-time Pro Bowl CB Xavien Howard to address secondary injuries
- Offensive tackle Blake Freeland and LB Jacob Phillips also placed on IR

As of August 18, 2025, the Indianapolis Colts have been dealt a significant blow with the news that rookie safety/linebacker Hunter Wohler's intriguing debut season has come to an abrupt end. Wohler has been placed on injured reserve due to a Lisfranc injury, a source confirmed to the IndyStar.
The Colts have also moved offensive tackle Blake Freeland and linebacker Jacob Phillips to IR, further depleting their roster. To address the growing injury concerns in the secondary, the team has signed 4-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard, who last played in 2023 after recovering from a foot injury.
Wohler had been working his way into a couple of key roles on the Colts' new defensive unit under coordinator Lou Anarumo, including as the backup strong safety to Nick Cross and in a dime linebacker position. However, his season-ending designation means he will not be able to return this year.
The Colts are now facing a significant challenge in their secondary, having also lost projected starting outside cornerback Justin Walley to a season-ending ACL tear. With other cornerback options like Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents also dealing with hamstring issues, the team has moved quickly to sign the veteran Howard to provide much-needed experience and stability.
