Colts' Goncalves: Year 2 Guard Transformation

Matt Goncalves is set to enter his second year as the Indianapolis Colts' starting right guard for the 2026 season, with significant improvement anticipated. Goncalves made a challenging positional switch from tackle to guard following Will Fries' departure in the 2025 offseason. Despite the steep learning curve and the increased speed and physicality of interior line play, Goncalves demonstrated resilience in his first year at the position.

Last season, Goncalves ranked 32nd out of 83 eligible guards in run-blocking and surrendered 34 pressures, with two sacks, in pass protection. Offensive line coach Tony Sparano acknowledged the initial growing pains but highlighted Goncalves' dedication and the substantial progress made. Sparano expects Goncalves to build on his 2025 experience and perform at a higher level in the upcoming season.

This offseason, Goncalves has focused on enhancing his physical presence, adding good weight to better counter the powerful interior pass rushers he will face. While he is the projected starter, rookie Jalen Farmer could challenge for playing time depending on training camp performance.
