Seattle Mariners rookie shortstop Colt Emerson will have season-ending surgery on Wednesday to repair a partially dislocated tendon in his left wrist. General manager Justin Hollander announced on Monday that Emerson is expected to be ready for the start of next season.
Emerson, 21, has been managing the wrist injury since prior to spring training. He signed an $95 million, eight-year contract on April 1, and made his major league debut in May, becoming the youngest Mariners player to do so since Félix Hernández in 2005. He initially performed well but struggled through the summer due to the injury.
In other team news, right-hander Bryan Woo is scheduled to make his start on Wednesday. Woo reported shoulder soreness after his last outing but felt better after a bullpen session on Sunday. Infielder J.P. Crawford is expected to be activated from the injured list on Tuesday. Infielder Brendan Donovan remains on the seven-day injured list due to concussion symptoms sustained on Sunday.
