- Powell secured victory with a bogey on the second playoff hole.
- He joins golf legends like Arnold Palmer in winning back-to-back titles.
Scranton Prep junior Cole Powell etched his name in golf history by winning his second consecutive PIAA Class 2A state championship. The tournament concluded Tuesday at the Penn State University Golf Courses, where Powell faced Annville-Cleona's Ben Allwein in a dramatic playoff.
Both golfers finished regulation with identical scores of 4-under-par 140, forcing a sudden-death playoff. After matching birdies on the first playoff hole, Powell carded a crucial bogey on the second hole when Allwein lost his tee shot. This allowed Powell to secure the victory and his second state title.
Powell's repeat championship places him among an elite group of nine boys to achieve this feat. He now shares this distinction with golfing icons such as Arnold Palmer, who won consecutive titles in 1946-47. Powell expressed immense pride in this accomplishment, noting the significant weight lifted by successfully defending his title.
Other notable performances included Scranton Prep teammate Bobby Stott, who tied for seventh in Class 2A with a 4-over 148. Abington Heights' Sebastien Meyer earned a medal, tying for eighth in Class 3A with a 2-under 142 on the White Course.
