Closer Shakeup: Trade Deadline Deals Reshape MLB Bullpens
2 Aug
Summary
- Hader remains top closer, Muñoz and Díaz close behind
- Mets add Helsley and Rogers to bolster bullpen
- Duran traded to Phillies, expected to take over closer role

As of August 2nd, 2025, the MLB closer landscape has undergone significant changes following the recent trade deadline. Josh Hader remains the top closer in baseball, having recorded 28 saves with a 2.22 ERA. Andrés Muñoz and Edwin Díaz are not far behind, with 24 and 23 saves respectively, and sub-2.00 ERAs.
The New York Mets made some notable additions to their bullpen, acquiring Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals and Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants. Helsley, who has 21 saves and a 3.00 ERA this season, is expected to serve as the primary setup man and next-in-line behind Díaz. Meanwhile, Rogers, with a 1.80 ERA over 50 innings, will provide additional high-leverage relief.
One of the biggest moves was the trade of Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins to the Philadelphia Phillies. Duran, who has locked down his first save for the Phillies, is expected to take over the majority, if not all, of the team's save opportunities, leaving Matt Strahm and Orion Kerkering as potential waiver wire additions.
The Padres also made a significant acquisition, trading for Mason Miller from the Oakland Athletics. While Robert Suarez is expected to remain the Padres' closer, Miller's dominant performance could lead to some save chances to keep the bullpen fresh down the stretch.
