Balogun's Triumph: From Cancer Diagnosis to England Squad

Christiana Balogun's rugby career was put on hold in 2022 after a diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. Despite the shock, she initially believed she could return to training soon after her diagnosis.

The 24-year-old's treatment involved three rounds of intense chemotherapy, causing severe side effects like fatigue, mouth ulcers, and hair loss. This period challenged her physical and mental strength, as well as her body identity.

Balogun found solace in her connection to rugby, engaging in match analysis and light training sessions while in the hospital. Her teammates, particularly Simi Pam, provided crucial support.

After receiving an all-clear in January 2023, Balogun faced the challenging transition back to daily life and recovery. She initially struggled with feeling equipped to rejoin her team at an elite level.

Her rugby journey began with a deep love for the sport, despite early challenges, including an incident where she accidentally broke a teammate's leg. She persevered, finding self-expression through the game's physicality.

Now 28, Balogun has earned a call-up to England's formidable Women's Six Nations squad. She remains focused on improving her game, cherishing the opportunity to represent her country after overcoming significant adversity.
