In the final round of qualifying for the 2025 US Open, held on October 28, 2025, two Chinese tennis players secured their spots in the main draw of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
The veteran of the group, 36-year-old Zhang Shuai, defeated fellow Chinese player Wei Sijia in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to reach the US Open main draw for the 12th time in her career. This will be Zhang's 49th appearance in a Grand Slam main draw overall. In the first round, she will face a tough challenge against Swiss player Belinda Bencic. Zhang had previously reached the fourth round at the US Open in 2022 and was a doubles champion at the event in 2021.
Joining Zhang in the main draw is the 24-year-old Wang Xiyu, who beat Russia's Alina Charaeva 2-1 in the qualifying rounds. Wang took the first set 6-4 but lost the second by the same score. However, she regained control in the decisive third set, winning it 6-2 to seal her place in the main draw. Wang's first-round opponent will be Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko.
The success of these two Chinese players at the US Open qualifiers is a testament to the depth of talent in the country's tennis program. Both Zhang and Wang will be looking to make a deep run in the main draw and potentially challenge for the title in the coming weeks.
