Challenger Hughes Vows to "Drown" Champ Nurmagomedov in Rematch
3 Oct
Summary
- Hughes "never been so confident" ahead of title rematch with Nurmagomedov
- Believes he can "drag Nurmagomedov into deep water and drown him"
- Nurmagomedov considered a top-5 fighter, but Hughes sees "immaturity" in him

As of October 4th, 2025, challenger Paul Hughes is gearing up for a highly anticipated rematch against PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov. Their first meeting in January of this year saw Nurmagomedov retain his then-Bellator title via majority decision, but Hughes is confident he can turn the tables this time around.
Hughes, who hails from Lavey, returned to the win column in May with a 42-second stoppage of Bruno Miranda at Belfast's SSE Arena. This victory has now opened the door for a second crack at the title. Heading into the rematch, Hughes says he has "never been so confident," vowing to "drag [Nurmagomedov] into deep water once again and this time I drown him."
While respectful of the champion's abilities, which he rates among the top five fighters in the world, Hughes believes there is still an element of "immaturity" and "arrogance" in Nurmagomedov's approach that could prove his undoing. The challenger is certain he has the tools to either knock out the defending champion or win every round on the scorecards.
