Ex-Tiger Mize Injured in Padres Uniform After Trade

Casey Mize, a former first overall pick for the Detroit Tigers, has been traded to the San Diego Padres. Recently, Mize sustained an ankle sprain during a game against the Minnesota Twins. The injury occurred when Mize slipped on the dugout steps between innings. He attempted to continue pitching but exited after 2⅔ innings with the team trainer.

Initial reports indicate that tests have shown no structural damage to Mize's ankle. Mize himself described the incident, explaining his cleat caught the edge of a step, causing him to slip and roll his ankle. He expressed optimism, hoping the injury will only keep him out on a day-to-day basis and allow him to make his next scheduled start. The Padres are currently in second place in the National League West, trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mize, originally drafted by the Tigers in 2018 and reaching the majors in 2020, has a career record of 28-32 with a 4.00 ERA. He is currently playing on a one-year contract with the Tigers for the 2026 season and is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the campaign.
