Cardinals QB Contract Drama: Brissett Holds Out

Rookie Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur commenced his first Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on Monday without his anticipated starting quarterback, Jacoby Brissett. Brissett remained absent from team activities as he is reportedly seeking a new contract.

Brissett joined the Cardinals in 2025 on a backup contract but stepped into a starting role during the prior season due to Kyler Murray's departure. With Murray no longer on the roster, Brissett is now in line to be the primary quarterback and is reportedly seeking compensation reflective of that role.

LaFleur addressed the situation, emphasizing Brissett's extensive experience and downplaying the immediate impact of his absence from voluntary OTAs. He noted that veterans like Brissett have already mastered the game's speed and schemes, requiring only minor adjustments to new terminology.

Despite LaFleur's assurances, Brissett's absence is concerning for a team undergoing a critical transition under a new coach. The Cardinals are reportedly open to contract negotiations, and an agreement sooner rather than later would be beneficial for team stability and success.

Brissett's holdout also raises questions about his starting position, with third-round draft pick Carson Beck and veteran Gardner Minshew vying for attention. The longer Brissett remains away, the more opportunities Beck and Minshew have to impress the coaching staff and potentially challenge for the starting job.
