Cancelo's Redemption: Flick's Faith Amidst Past Nightmares
20 Oct
Summary
- Joao Cancelo seeks to atone for past errors against PSG.
- Hansi Flick plans a key role for Cancelo in the upcoming match.
- Barcelona faces defensive absences, increasing Cancelo's importance.
João Cancelo is set to face Paris Saint-Germain, aiming to overcome painful memories from Barcelona's 2024 Champions League exit. He was central to the team's downfall in the second leg, which saw them lose 1-4 at home after a strong first-leg performance.
The upcoming match offers Cancelo a fresh opportunity for redemption. Coach Hansi Flick intends to utilize him prominently, despite the difficult recollections of events like conceding a crucial equalizer and a penalty in the previous encounter.
Barcelona faces defensive challenges due to absences, making Cancelo a likely starter at left-back. Flick prefers Cancelo on the left, believing his attacking capabilities are best utilized there, coordinating with forwards. This contrasts with a more conservative role for the right-back.
Flick is also considering defensive pairings, with Gerard Martín being assessed and Álex Campos remaining an option. The team acknowledges they are not in peak condition but remains optimistic about competing.
