Dodgers' Ex-Pitcher Ferguson DFA'd by Cardinals

Caleb Ferguson, a veteran left-handed pitcher who previously spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has had his brief tenure with the St. Louis Cardinals cut short. The Cardinals designated him for assignment after only nine games, citing his failure to deliver the expected performance. This decision means Ferguson is now available to be claimed off waivers by other MLB teams.

Ferguson's time with the Cardinals concluded quickly as the team opted to use his roster spot on a different pitcher. Given the trade deadline has passed, his only path to a new team is through the waiver process. Any club claiming him would assume the remainder of his salary, approximately $750K of his $4.5MM for the 2026 season. While he could be an inexpensive option for teams needing left-handed depth, his recent struggles might deter some suitors.

Ferguson originally joined the Dodgers organization in 2014 and made his MLB debut in 2018. He became a valuable bullpen piece for Los Angeles, posting strong ERAs in subsequent seasons, including a 1.82 ERA in 2022 and a 3.43 ERA in 2023. After being traded to the New York Yankees in 2024, his career has taken him away from the team where he established himself.
