Caden Hunter, selected by the Orioles in the sixth round of the 2025 draft, has rapidly climbed the prospect rankings following an exceptional 2026 season. After beginning his collegiate career at Sierra College and transferring to USC, Hunter was drafted by Baltimore and signed at slot value.
His professional debut saw a remarkable breakout, with a 1.17 ERA at Delmarva before a promotion to Frederick. At High-A, he pitched 45 innings with a 1.60 ERA and a 62/19 K/BB ratio, earning another promotion to Double-A.
At Double-A, Hunter continued his strong performance, posting a 3.09 ERA over 35 innings despite facing older competition. He concluded the 2026 season with a 2.01 ERA across 103 innings pitched over three levels, boasting a 1.058 WHIP and 151 strikeouts against 47 walks.
MLB Pipeline now ranks Hunter as the Orioles' fourth-best prospect and the 92nd best in baseball. His fastball, which can reach 98 MPH, is a key weapon, complemented by a slider, changeup, and curveball. The organization and Pipeline believe he has the potential to be a starter.
Hunter is expected to return to Double-A in the spring of 2027 with an opportunity to advance quickly to Triple-A Norfolk. A potential MLB debut in 2027 as a starter or in a relief role is possible. The Orioles, needing left-handed pitching, have Hunter and Joseph Dzierwa developing in the upper minors, alongside prospects like Anthony Eyanson.
While Hunter faces challenges ahead, particularly at the Triple-A level, his 2026 campaign has generated significant optimism. He represents a valuable asset in Baltimore's system, with potential to climb higher in prospect rankings as others graduate.
