Cavalli's Suspension Cut to 5 Games After Appeal
7 Jul
Summary
- Cade Cavalli's suspension reduced from seven to five games.
- The incident involved a verbal exchange with Willson Contreras.
- Cavalli apologized for his comment, acknowledging historical context.

Cade Cavalli of the Washington Nationals will commence a five-game suspension this Monday, a reduction from an initial seven-game penalty. Cavalli appealed the decision following an altercation last Tuesday with Willson Contreras and the Boston Red Sox. The suspension was for Cavalli's conduct during a benches-clearing incident in the fourth inning of the Nationals' game.
Cavalli has since apologized for his comment directed at Contreras, acknowledging the historical connotations of the term "boy." While Cavalli maintained he did not intend for the remark to be disparaging, he recognized that the word can carry racist undertones. Contreras, who is Venezuelan, had questioned the racial implications of the comment.
Other players, including Contreras, Nate Eaton, and Miles Mikolas, also faced suspensions and fines for their roles in the incident. Mikolas began playing while his suspension was held in abeyance. Cavalli's appeal outcome will determine the final length of his penalty.
