BYU Cougars Seek New Rushing Options as Sione Moa Remains Sidelined
4 Oct, 2025
Summary
- Backup RB Sione Moa out for foreseeable future
- Head coach Kalani Sitake confident in depth behind starter LJ Martin
- Freshman Logan Payne and redshirt freshman Jovesa Damuni could see more reps

As of October 4th, 2025, the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars will be missing one of their key offensive playmakers, but head coach Kalani Sitake isn't overly concerned. Backup running back Sione Moa, a critical part of BYU's offense last season, remains out for the foreseeable future after missing the recent game against Colorado.
Despite Moa's absence, Sitake believes there is enough depth behind starting running back LJ Martin to keep the Cougars' rushing attack productive. "We are fine," Sitake said. "We've got guys who can run the ball. You just don't know about them yet."
The options behind Martin in terms of experience are thin, with Enoch Nawahine having just 108 rushing yards in three years at Provo. Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick has also moved safety Preston Rex to running back in the offseason to add more depth. Freshman Logan Payne and redshirt freshman Jovesa Damuni could also see increased reps, though they haven't had significant playing time yet.
"There are guys who are capable of running the ball," Sitake said. "They are probably just not common names or guys that you have heard about. But they are super talented."
Roderick has relied heavily on Martin so far this season, with the starting running back having 61 touches for 456 total yards and an average of 100 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier also contributed 98 rushing yards against Colorado. However, BYU will eventually need another reliable rushing option to emerge alongside Martin.
"A lot of you guys didn't know about Sione Moa last year either," Sitake said, expressing confidence in running backs coach Harvey Unga to develop the team's depth at the position.
