Beau Nicklay, a rising senior at Byron High School, has announced his verbal commitment to play Division II football for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The safety and receiver shared his decision on social media on June 30.
During his junior season, Nicklay recorded 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and one interception returned for a touchdown. He also contributed on offense with 120 yards and two touchdowns on five catches.
Nicklay's choice was solidified by his experiences at UMD's annual team football camps and the relationships he built with the coaching staff. He received four Division II offers but ultimately chose UMD over the University of Sioux Falls.
Nicklay joins fellow Byron senior Jaymeson Smith, who also committed to UMD on June 26. Other recent commits from Byron include Jordan Heimer and Mason Edwards.
The Byron High School football program emphasizes team camps and dedicated training, contributing to its consistent success in advancing players to the college level. Nicklay hopes to provide strong leadership in his final high school season.
