However, the crowd energy was somewhat flat and disconnected, with one side of the grandstands starting a cheer while the other had something else going. At times, the atmosphere turned foul, particularly when Rory McIlroy was shown warming up on the range.
The event also saw tighter security measures in place for the late morning arrival of President Donald Trump. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley set the tone early, grabbing a microphone and telling the crowd, "Let's (expletive) go, boys!"
