Broncos Face Tight End Threat: Is McBride NFL's Best?

As the Broncos defense prepares to face the Arizona Cardinals, their primary focus will be containing tight end Trey McBride. At 26 years old, McBride has established himself as a top-tier tight end, currently tied for the league lead in receptions with 49. His versatility allows offensive schemes to be flexible, forcing defenses to adapt.

Broncos coach Sean Payton compared McBride to other unique tight ends like Brock Bowers, highlighting their ability to match up against defensive backs. Despite McBride being a Colorado native and former Colorado State standout, Denver missed the opportunity to draft him in 2022. The team has since focused on building talent through various means but has notably failed to find a comparable player at tight end.

Denver's tight ends, including Adam Trautman and Nate Adkins, offer reliability but lack the dynamic playmaking ability of elite tight ends like McBride. This season, Denver's tight ends have combined for 18 catches, significantly fewer than McBride's individual total. The article notes that while some top tight ends are drafted early, many successful ones, like McBride, Kittle, and Kelce, were selected in the middle rounds, posing a long-term question for the Broncos.

The Broncos' search for their own elite tight end continues, with potential avenues including the draft or trade deadline. Past successes by Payton in New Orleans with tight ends like Jimmy Graham indicate the potential impact of such a player. While unlikely, exploring trade options, such as for Detroit's Sam LaPorta, could be considered.
