Having recently announced his retirement from professional football, Sheffield United icon Billy Sharp has revealed his aspiration to move into coaching and management. The prolific goalscorer, who netted 299 times throughout his career, has been diligently preparing for this transition for over a decade, obtaining his coaching badges and a football management diploma from the League Managers' Association.
Sharp's extensive playing career included six promotions and scoring in all top four divisions of English football. He enjoyed significant success with his boyhood club, Sheffield United, scoring 109 goals in 282 league games and securing three promotions. His prowess as a striker is notable, with 130 goals in the Championship since 2004, more than any other player.
He also disclosed that he was approached last season to join Chris Wilder's staff at Sheffield United while still playing for Doncaster Rovers, though this move did not materialize. Currently, Sharp is enjoying time with his family and has also engaged in punditry, which he finds beneficial for his understanding of the game and networking within football.
Reflecting on his success as a "bagsman," Sharp emphasized the importance of calmness, a willingness to put his body on the line, and mental preparation, such as visualizing plays. He acknowledged his limitations in speed but highlighted his knack for being in the right place at the right time, noting his improvement as a player and not just a goalscorer with increased experience.
