Bills Stadium: Views Obstructed, Prices Skyrocket

The Buffalo Bills' new Highmark Stadium has faced fan backlash due to obstructed views in some seating sections. Beyond sightline issues, the primary concern is the steep cost of attending games. Personal Seat Licenses (PSLs), which grant the right to purchase season tickets, range from $750 to $50,000 per seat. For some season ticketholders, comparable seats that cost $4,300 last year are now priced at $8,610, leading many to downgrade their seating.

This trend is not unique to the Bills; five other NFL teams are planning new stadiums within the next five years, all expected to feature similar pricing models. Experts predict these new stadiums will increase ticket prices by at least 30%, a pattern observed during the last stadium construction boom. PSLs are a significant revenue stream for teams, as revenue from ticket sales is shared league-wide, but PSL income is retained by individual teams. The Bills reportedly raised approximately $250 million from PSL sales for their new 60,000-seat venue.

While new stadiums offer enhanced amenities like wider seats and improved concessions, they also come with reduced overall capacity, with the Bills' new stadium holding 60,000 compared to the old one's 71,600. This reduction, combined with strong post-pandemic demand for live events, is a major driver of higher ticket prices. Despite complaints about obstructed views affecting a small percentage of fans, the demand for NFL tickets remains high, with no season tickets currently available for the Bills.
