Bills Add Journeyman Kicker for Playoff Push
7 Jan
Summary
- Matthew Wright joins practice squad due to Matt Prater's quad injury.
- Wright previously kicked for Jacksonville in a 2021 game.
- Coach McDermott plans for two kicking scenarios for Sunday's game.

The Buffalo Bills are bolstering their kicking game by adding veteran Matthew Wright to the practice squad. This move comes as a precaution because of a quad injury that forced veteran kicker Matt Prater out of the regular season finale on January 4. Wright, who has experience with multiple NFL teams, was previously considered for the Bills' kicking duties when Prater first sustained the injury.
Head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that the team is preparing for both possibilities regarding Prater's availability for the upcoming January 11 playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the preference is for Prater to kick, the team is ready to rely on Wright if Prater is unable to play. Prater returned for the Week 18 game but was sidelined after halftime due to his injury.
Notably, Matthew Wright has a history with the Jaguars, having kicked for them during their 2021 matchup against the Bills, where he successfully made three field goals. Wright's career field goal percentage stands at 88.2%, adding a layer of familiar competition as the Bills head into their postseason contest.
