Bills Safety Shuffle: Hamlin Back, But Starters Set
29 Mar
Summary
- Hamlin re-signed, but expected to fill depth/special teams role.
- Bishop and Gardner-Johnson are projected starters at safety.
- Stone provides experienced backup with strong ball skills.
The Buffalo Bills have brought back Damar Hamlin on a one-year deal, a move that has sparked discussion among fans. However, Hamlin's return is not expected to significantly impact the team's defensive strategy for the upcoming season.
The Bills have already secured veteran free agents C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Geno Stone, alongside returning starter Cole Bishop. Bishop and Gardner-Johnson are projected to form the starting safety tandem, with Stone poised to be the primary backup. Their combined experience and ball-hawking abilities solidify the position.
Hamlin is anticipated to serve in a depth and special teams capacity, a role fitting his current career stage. Other players like Jordan Hancock, drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, are also competing for similar roles. Despite Hamlin's polarizing reception, the Bills' safety unit has undergone a clear transition this offseason.
