The World Athletics Continental Tour, upgraded to Silver category, returns to Bhubaneswar on Saturday, August 22, marking a significant step for Indian athletics. The competition will host 187 elite track and field athletes from 27 nations, with 36 athletes ranked within the top 50 globally.
This event serves as a critical phase of preparation for the Indian contingent aiming for the Asian Games. Notable Indian athletes participating include Animesh Kujur, Gurindervir Singh, Murali Sreeshankar, and Jyothi Yarraji. They will use this meet to refine their strategies before subsequent training camps.
The tour includes 18 disciplines, equally divided between men and women. Athletes will compete for World Athletics ranking points and cash prizes, with $1,600 for first place. The participation of world-class athletes like Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi provides valuable exposure for domestic competitors.
While Neeraj Chopra is not participating, the javelin throw event will feature strong Indian representation. Marathon runner Kartik Karkera will compete in the 5000m event, presenting an interesting adaptation challenge for the athlete. The meet will be livestreamed on the World Athletics YouTube channel starting at 4:30 PM.
