Ben Shelton Withdraws From Japan Open

Ben Shelton will not compete in the 2026 Japan Open, opting instead for rest and recovery. The American player announced his withdrawal, citing the demanding schedule of the US Open and his participation in the Davis Cup tie in Czechia as reasons for his body's fatigue.

Shelton, who won his maiden ATP title at the 2023 Japan Open, expressed his disappointment at missing the event. "The US Open and Davis Cup took a toll on my body, and I'm not going to be able to make it," he stated. He conveyed his hope to return to Tokyo in 2027.

Currently third in the 'Live ATP Race to Turin,' Shelton aims to secure his spot in the ATP Finals. If healthy, he plans to resume his season at the Shanghai Masters, which commences on October 7. This event marks a potential return after a period of rest, as he seeks crucial ranking points.

With Shelton out, the focus shifts to other top contenders at the Japan Open, including top seed Carlos Alcaraz. Fans had anticipated a potential rematch between Alcaraz and Shelton, following their exciting quarter-final clash at the US Open. The absence of the American player opens the door for other seeded players like Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz to vie for the title.
