Asante Samuel Accuses Belichick of Hypocrisy in College Coaching Debut

As of November 15th, 2025, former New England Patriots defensive star Asante Samuel has spoken out against his former coach, Bill Belichick, regarding Belichick's transition to college football with the UNC Tar Heels.

Belichick, who retired from the NFL in 2023 after a legendary career that saw him win six Super Bowls with the Patriots, is now facing "growing pains" in his first season as the head coach of the Tar Heels. Beyond the team's 4-5 record on the field, Belichick has also faced significant scrutiny off the field, particularly over his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson and her reported involvement with the coach's football dealings.

Samuel, a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback, believes Belichick is being a "hypocrite" in his new role. The former player noted that the "Belichick way," which brought so much success in the NFL, is not translating well to the college game and younger athletes. "Obviously, he has to grow out of his ways," Samuel said.

The conversation also sparked a moment of reflection for Samuel, who recalled that Belichick used to hold his players to strict standards when it came to media and personal distractions. "Coach's got all this stuff going on. Coach, where did this come from? Why wasn't we able to enjoy ourselves like this now that you want to enjoy yourself!" Samuel questioned.

While Samuel acknowledged that Belichick should "find happiness" in his personal life, he believes the longtime coach is not living up to the same standards he once demanded of his players.
