Bears sign Marcus Davenport: Pass rush boost?

The Chicago Bears are enhancing their defensive line competition with the addition of veteran edge rusher Marcus Davenport. Davenport, 29, brings 43 career starts and familiarity with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who coached him during his time with the New Orleans Saints. Allen previously selected Davenport 14th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, trading a future first-round pick.

Despite flashes of potential, including a nine-sack season in 2021, Davenport's NFL career has been plagued by injuries, limiting his impact. He played in only 14 games over his last three seasons, with a minimal stat line in seven starts for Detroit last season.

Davenport is expected to contribute as a run stopper on early downs and potentially rotate in on passing downs, possibly even playing a hybrid role on the interior due to his size. His signing prompts speculation about roster spots for other defensive linemen, such as Kentavius Street and Daniel Hardy.
