Bears' O-Line Carousel: Left Tackle Battle Intensifies

The Chicago Bears are grappling with a persistent lack of clarity at the left tackle position with the season opener rapidly approaching. Veteran offensive lineman Joe Thuney, entering his 11th NFL season, maintains a composed approach despite the ongoing competition, focusing on consistent communication and execution regardless of who plays next to him.

Coach Ben Johnson acknowledged that Thuney, a five-time All-Pro, would benefit from establishing rapport with a consistent teammate at left tackle. Currently, multiple players are competing for the starting role, including Braxton Jones, Kiran Amegadjie, Jedrick Wills, and Theo Benedet, with Ozzy Trapilo also working his way back from injury.

Amegadjie and Wills have also seen time at right tackle, adding to the fluidity of the offensive line. The Bears' coaching staff, including offensive coordinator Press Taylor and offensive line coach Dan Roushar, recognizes the urgency to finalize the starting five. Joint practices in Cincinnati will provide intense, one-on-one matchups to evaluate the tackles' performance.

While progress has been observed in all candidates, inconsistencies remain a concern. Braxton Jones is seen as having an inside track if he finishes the preseason strong, but his injury history and durability are factors. Ultimately, the Bears aim to solidify their offensive line, ideally identifying their primary options, Plans A, B, and C, before the regular season begins.
