As India's government introduces the 'Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025', the country's cricket industry is bracing for potential upheaval. The new legislation has raised concerns about the impact on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as two of its prominent sponsors, Dream11 and My11Circle, are major players in the online gaming space.
The BCCI, however, has made it clear that it will strictly adhere to the government's policies and laws. The board's secretary, Devajit Saikia, has stated that the BCCI will not engage in any activities that are not permitted by the law, drawing parallels to the board's past stance on sponsorship from cigarette and liquor companies.
Saikia has also welcomed the government's recent policy announcement regarding India and Pakistan's sporting ties. While bilateral contests between the two nations will be banned, their teams will be allowed to participate in multilateral events, clearing the way for the upcoming Asia Cup and Women's ODI World Cup fixtures.
The BCCI's commitment to following the government's lead is unwavering, as Saikia has emphasized that the board will "100% abide by the policy framed by the central government" in all matters, whether it's participating in international sporting events or securing sponsorships.
