The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to advocate for significant changes in the upcoming Future Tours Programme (FTP) cycle, aiming for the 2027-31 period. A key focus will be ensuring sufficient player rest and dedicated time for acclimatization in overseas conditions, particularly in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) nations. These proposals will be presented at an FTP workshop scheduled for September 22-23, 2026, in Dubai.
This initiative comes as cricket boards globally grapple with an overloaded international calendar. The BCCI's FTP managers will need to navigate existing bilateral commitments and ICC events to create these crucial gaps. India is slated to host England for five Tests in early 2028 and tour Australia later that year, followed by return tours in 2029 and 2031, interspersed with major ICC tournaments.
Furthermore, there is a discernible shift in perspective among cricket boards, with a growing belief that bilateral matches are losing their appeal and financial viability. Consequently, there's a push towards increasing the number of multilateral games, such as tri-series and quadrangular tournaments, which are perceived to offer greater financial rewards.
