Barkley Warns Kittle: Pickleball is a Pain Trap!

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently advised San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle to avoid pickleball upon retiring from professional sports. Appearing on Kittle's podcast, Barkley described pickleball as a dangerous activity for aging athletes.

Barkley shared that his physician acquaintances note a high volume of pickleball-related injuries. He characterized the sport as a frequent cause of harm for older participants, noting that doctors benefit from the resulting medical business.

Kittle acknowledged Barkley's concerns, mentioning personal knowledge of athletes sustaining serious injuries such as fractured wrists and Achilles tears from pickleball. He confirmed his intention to focus on low-impact activities like golf and swimming post-football.

Pickleball's popularity has surged, especially among adults over 55. However, health experts highlight risks from its sharp movements and repetitive motions, leading to common injuries like ACL tears and tendon ruptures, particularly when players underestimate its demands.

This discussion echoes Barkley's past criticisms of NBA players' interest in pickleball, including investments by stars like LeBron James in professional leagues. The sport, invented in 1965, features specific court dimensions and rules, including a no-volley zone known as "the kitchen."

Despite its perceived ease, the sport's quick changes in direction and reflexes contribute to increased emergency room visits. Both Barkley and Kittle, who plan to pursue less strenuous activities, emphasize caution for those returning to sports.
