Summary
- Badminton World Federation shifts to 15-point games from 2027.
- First domestic tournament adopts new format in Ernakulam.
- Players and coaches debate impact on game's fitness and appeal.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced a significant change to the sport's scoring system, moving from three 21-point games to three 15-point games, effective January 4, 2027. This shift aims to create more exciting matches and prioritize player welfare by allowing for better recovery time.
The recent All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament at Ernakulam's Regional Sports Centre became the inaugural domestic event to trial the new 15-point format. Player responses have been varied, with some, like Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ashwini Ponnappa, expressing concern that the change might diminish the sport's appeal and reduce the importance of physical fitness, a traditional hallmark of badminton.
Conversely, younger players like 18-year-old Bjorn Jaison found the new format acceptable after experiencing it. Organizers believe the early adoption in domestic tournaments will help Indian players and officials adapt before the international rule change. Some, like former national player George Thomas, liken the potential impact to T20 cricket, predicting increased audience excitement and potential benefits for player recovery and injury prevention.
However, prominent figures such as former India chief coach Vimal Kumar and former All England champion Pullela Gopichand have voiced significant reservations. They worry that the reduced game duration may negatively impact the sport's long-term appeal and could disadvantage stroke players. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) is facilitating this transition by using the 15-point system in qualifying draws of domestic tournaments to familiarize participants.
